Who Wants To Be a Doctor? 13 FAQs about the DOH Scholarship

Ever since I was a child, I was one of those kids whom when you ask, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” will always answer, “I want to be a doctor.”, even though I excel more in Math subjects.  That answer never changed.

In college, I chose a course in line with Health, which is Medical Technology.  After I graduated, I worked for a while but the burning desire of becoming a doctor never left me.  So when my sister offered to help out, I grabbed my chance and enrolled In PLM.  Luckily, I was admitted and later, a scholarship grant was also offered by “The First Gentleman’s Foundation” under President Arroyo’s term then.  After graduation, I worked as a Doctor-to-the-Barrio under the DOH and earned my Masters too while serving in the community.  Until now, it’s one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life; to be a part of something bigger than me.  My journey from a doctor to a doctor of finance is part of a different story that can be told some other time.

Now that the same opportunity is now being offered to new doctor wannabes in this present administration of President Rodrigo Duterte, I would like to help out by making this post for an easier information drive.

Last week, I have posted about the scholarship on Facebook and since then my inbox have been flooded with so many messages of different types of people (students, OFWs, nurses, engineers, accountants, high school students, etc) wanting to become a doctor.  So, I did further research and called Department of Health, HHRDB Department for a more comprehensive article to answer the most common questions that are asked regarding the DOH Scholarship for doctor wannabes.

Here are the most frequently asked questions about the scholarship program:

1.What is the first and most important step that an aspirant must achieve in order to qualify for the medical scholarship in DOH?

For those who want to avail of the scholarship, the most important qualification is that – they have to be accepted as a medical student in the partner medical schools.

2. What are the general or basic qualifications in order to get accepted into a medical school? (medical schools – in general)

This list of requirements below is from one of the medical schools in the Philippines.  The list may differ from school to school preferences and rules.  I am just giving you the basic criteria so that you will have some idea on how to get into a state university – medical school.

  • Must be a natural Filipino citizen
  • Must be a holder of Bachelor’s Degree conferred upon by a duly recognized education institution
  • Must have complied with all academic preparations
  • General Weighted Average of 2.50 or its equivalent or better (depending on the medical school)
  • Must have an NMAT of 45 and above (depending on the medical school)
  • Must have no failure in any subject in the undergraduate course (depending on the medical school)
  • Must have no record of having been dropped from any medical school
  • Must have no record of having been denied admission
  • Must have no record of conviction of a crime involving moral turpitude
  • Must pass the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test)
  • Must have passed a panel of interview

3. What if I have a Bachelor’s Degree but is not in-lined with medicine. Can I still enroll in a medical school?

Yes, I have a classmate with Legal Management as her pre-med course before, as long as you must have complied with all academic preparations.

You must have earned credits in the following areas and must have satisfied the required minimum number of units in the subject specifically enumerated herein: (again, depending on the medical school)
Sciences: 35 units
Chemistry: 10 units
Inorganic Chemistry: 5 units
Organic Chemistry/Biochemistry: 5 units
Natural Sciences: 15 units (5 units should at least be Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy or Human Anatomy and Physiology)
Physics: 5 units
Microbiology or Elem. Genetics: 5 units
Mathematics: 6 units
Algebra: 3 units
Elementary Statistics/Biostatistics: 3 units
Language and Communication: 9 units
Social Sciences: 9 units
(Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, History, Anthropology)
Humanities: 3 units
(Art Appreciation, Logic, Philosophy)

4. What are the partner medical schools where a student can enroll to be eligible for the scholarship?

There are six schools in partner with this scholarship grant:

  • University of the Philippines – Ermita, Manila
  • Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila – Intramuros, Manila
  • Cagayan State University – Carig Sur, Tuguegarao City
  • West Visayas State University – Lapaz, Iloilo City
  • University of the Philippines, School of Health Sciences – Palo, Leyte
  • Mindanao State University – Bonifacio Ave., Iligan City

Only those who have been admitted to the partner schools are eligible to apply for the DOH Scholarship.

5. Is this only offered to new students? What if the student is already enrolled in those medical schools, can they also apply for a scholarship?

The scholarship grant is not only offered to first year students in those partner medical schools but  this is also available to medical students (on whatever year) in those partner schools.  They can still apply for the scholarship as a lateral entry scholar as long as you agreed with the payback mechanism of being a DOH medical scholar.

6. What will be the payback mechanism for having been a DOH scholar?

For every year of scholarship, the scholar will render two (2) years of service obligation, initially through the Doctors-to-the-Barrios (DTTB) Program for the first three (3) years.

The ratio is 1:2 (No. of years of being a scholar: Years of payback)

7. Once I have been accepted as a student of those partner medical schools, what are the other qualification requirements of a DOH Scholarship grant?

The above list of qualifications I listed in #2 is the qualifications on how to get into a medical school.  Those listed below are the qualifications specifically identified by the DOH Medical Scholarship Grant.  Here they are:

  • Must be a Filipino citizen.
  • Student of moral character.
  • Graduate of Bachelor’s Degree
  • Preference shall be given to students coming from:
    • Low-income families
    • Geographically isolated and disadvantaged municipalities/provinces or from top 20 poorest provinces/municipalities/cities
    • Indigenous communities/minority sects
    • Children/dependents of government employees, victims of calamity/tragedy, police/military injured/fatally wounded while on duty, Barangay Health Workers/traditional birth attendants

8. What do I need to do to apply for the scholarship program?

Once you are already a medical student from the partner schools you can already apply.

Documents to be accomplished are:

  • Scholarship Contract
  • Commitment to Render Service
  • DOH Scholarship Application Form
  • 1×1 ID (within the last 6 months)
  • Attachments:
    • Copy of Barangay Certification/Certification of a Bona Fide Resident of the Community
    • Copy of Combined Family Income Tax Return (ITR)
    • Certificate of Indigency (if applicable)
    • Certification from National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP) (if applicable)

The DOH Scholarship forms and other documents needed are already with the partner medical school.  Just ask for the forms and procedures there.

9. Where do I pass the forms?

In the partner schools you are enrolled into.  The partner school shall be the one that will forward it to the Department of Health (DOH).  The validation and final evaluation of applicants by the DOH are based on a set of criteria.

10. How would I know if I get accepted as a scholar?

Successful scholars shall be notified through the Scholarship Department of the partner schools.

11. What are the inclusions of the scholarship package?

The scholarship package basically includes tuition, other fees, book allowance, uniform allowance, miscellaneous allowance, living subsidy, lodging allowance, transportation allowance, annual medical insurance, summer immersion program and transportation expenses allowance.

The tuition, laboratory, miscellaneous and other school fees will be paid directly to partner schools.

12. What if I’m still in third year college now (pre-med course), will the program still run until I graduate and become a medical student 2 years from now?

Yes, the program is already planned for 5 years during this present administration.  The continuation of this program will depend on the decisions of the next administration.

13. What is in store for me during my payback? Will I get paid while being a Doctor-to-the-Barrio?

You will be employed under DOH as a Doctor-to-the-Barrio (DTTB).

Yes, as a matter of fact, the current salary of a DTTB is 64,614/month plus all the benefits will be given as provided from the Magna Carta of Public Health Workers and a Master’s Degree in Public Management Major in Health Systems and Development (MPM-HSD) which is being run by the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP).  I’m lucky to be part of the first graduates of this course.

14. In general, what are the steps?

Ok, let’s recap and let me make it easier to digest.

Here are the 7 simple steps:

Step 1: Earn a Bachelor Degree of any 4-year-course. Any course is allowed, but for me, preferably, a health related course.  Maintain good grades, this will be an edge when you enroll in a medical school.

Step 2. Get your NMAT (National Medical Admission Test), usually done twice a year: October or November and March or April. Graduates or graduating students of a Bachelor’s Degree can already take this.

Step 3: Enroll in medical schools that are partnered with DOH for the scholarship program.

Step 4: Once accepted into the medical school, get application forms and furnish other required documents and apply to the said partner school.

Step 5: Wait for the approval of your application that will be coming from the Department of Health.

Step 6: Once a scholar, maintain the required average, have a good moral character and study hard and pass the Physician Licensure Exams.

Step 7: Once a fully pledged doctor, do your payback by serving the remote and doctor-less areas in our country as a Doctor-to-the-Barrio.

 15. What if I have other questions that are not discussed here? Who do I contact directly?

For further inquiries, kindly contact the DOH Regional Offices nearest to you or the HHRDB of Department of Health

Good day Dr. Intal. I’m an aspiring doctor but financial problems seem to be a hindrance. Then, I’ve read this, your blog about DOH scholarship. I wonder if I still need to take up an exam in order to be qualified or i only need to pass all the needed requirements? Does the scholarship covers the INTARMED program of UPCM? Honestly, I’m not confident enough regarding on the level of my cognitive abilities if i will be capable to handle the pressure, challenges etc. on choosing this course or if i can even pass the qualifications to be a med student. I just want to be a doctor but I do not know if i can.

  5. Ron andrie

Good day po 😊 After the required 2-3 years DTTB will i be able to apply for residency? Is that considered as return service? Thanks 😊

  6. M

Thank you for sharing this doc! I wanted to apply in PLM but unfortunately I’m not a Manila resident. Will this scholarship apply even if I’m not a Manila resident (like cover all the expenses in med)?

  7. An aspiring medical practitioner to my own and beloved barrio.. It was a dream come true when I had read this post of you dok..If God’s permit and was able to pass the licensure exam, I will notify you doctor to . Thank You so much.

HI Dr. Pinky! 🙂 Thank you for sharing this information. Badly needed. Hehe. I plan to pursue Medicine next year (A.Y. 2018-2019). As I have read, this program will be continued for the entire current administration (Please correct me if I am wrong). I am just wondering about this: “The validation and final evaluation of applicants by the DOH are based on a set of criteria.” Would you happen to have an information what is this set of criteria the DOH will be using to be accepted into the scholarship? I am finally determined to study Medicine next year; however I have major financial constraints.

Thank you very much for your response! 🙂

    Future MD

Good day Doc Pinky! I just want to ask a very “mukhang pera” type of question. I just want to know whether the financial aid will be given in bulk or monthly. I am so sorry for that question, I just really want to study Medicine.

    • No, it’s every semester.

      • Leen

Good afternoon po. Im sorry po to disturb but im anxious now po. I have been selected po as a DOH medicine scholar po and return of service contract has been signed (incoming third po ako). during that time i still need to take removals po. Ngaun po, i flunked during my removals and now po, gusto ko po na mag re enroll as 2nd yr with the hope na magagamit ko po ang scholarship. Pwede po ba un? Thank you po sa pagreply

        • Nako sorry Leen, I did not know of someone with your case eh. So I can’t tell. Please ask DOH about it. I hope they can help you.

  11. Syashe

Hi po ask ko lang po sana if pwede parin maka avail ng scholarship yung mga aspiring student who wants to proceed med kahit na average income meron yung family niya pero di lang ma suportahan?

  12. Leona

Hello Dr. Pinky, thank you very much for sharing! But I just want to ask doc if you dont mind, once you graduate and become a doctor to the barrio, what is the process of being assigned to a barrio or barangay? Will you be asked a preference or will you be relocated anywhere? Also doc, if you are not able to finish med school but you are on the scholarship, what will likely happen? Will you have to repay the scholarship amount on full? Thank you very much, doc!

    • It depends on what available places/slots are there during that time. You can choose from available places. I don’t know what will happen if you don’t finish med school. Sorry. You can ask DOH directly. But that would be a waste if that’s happen. Sayang.

  13. Diane Mae

Hello po Dr Pinky 😊 tanong ko lang po regarding the payback mechanism ng scholarship.. Tatapusin po ba muna yung pag render ng service po before po maka residency training? ☺

    • you can do the payback while going into residency in a public hospital, earning an income. It’s a Plus actually on getting accepted in residency.

  14. Good day po doc im a nurse for almost 5 years. Can i ask po before you apply po for the scholarship program needed po ba to take the nmat muna talaga? Or we can pass out application na rin agad sa schools?. And doc in my college days po when taking bachelor’s degree im not a prodigy student can i hope parin ba na makuha sa program? Since then kasi want to be a doctor but because of financial can pursue it on my own need to work hard first talaga.

    • You need to take NMAT. To enter to med school. once you entered na, that’s the time you apply for scholarship. Yes, hard work and a lot of prayers, if it’s meant for you, it will be for you. No matter what.

  15. Anne

Hello po Dr. Pinky 🙂 Do we get the freedom to choose where or what barrio will we go to for the DTTB service?

  16. Gio

Hello Doc! Is this program still available in 2020 or 2021?

Super thank you po sa napaka-informative na blog. 😊 God bless!

  17. Good day po doc. I’m a pharmacist po and working , ask ko lang po about sa general average during college days po kung pwedi po mag avail even though not having high grades? Or my cut off po ang grades?
    Thank you po

  18. Mayde Galawen

Hello po Dra. If I got my MD, can i practice as DTTB while having my residency? Thanks po..^^

  19. rob

Hi Doc. I am a 2008 graduate of Nursing. Can I take NMAT and be admitted at any medical school or do I need a refresher course? Thanks. I am planning to take the NMAT this coming March 25, 2018. Thank you!

  20. ina

Hello po, doc. Thank you for this very informative and enlightening blog post. I would just like to ask kasi i saw in a post somewhere that less than 30000 po ang combined ITR na criteria for DOH scholarship. Is it really like that or what if low income pa rin po pero higher than 30k, matatanggap pa rin ba or hindi na? Also, if i worked before my application, kelangan pa rin po ba isama ang ITR ko with my parents sa application or no need na?

Last, i saw in the replies that you mentioned na you can apply “once you’re aready a med student”. Can I apply and know the results of my application BEFORE the first semester of my first year (before enroling and officially becoming a med student) or matagal pa po makakaapply at malalaman ang result? Sorry, doc. i’m just holding to this small hope and i’m afraid na mapasubo. Thank you so much, doc.

    • Hi Ina, I don’t have idea on how they approve the application. It’s a process and the decision is within the DOH itself. But you can try on calling them. I put in there the contact numbers. Please try calling them, and tell them your situation right now. They can be able to help you.

  21. joy

Doc, how long will it take before you find out the results of your application if, for example, you apply before enrolment? i’m just worried that the results won’t be released until the second semester and i have no idea whether i’ll get accepted or not and i’ll end up shouldering everything. what happened in your case, did you find out before the enrolmet of your first semester?

  22. Ken

I was wondering if there are scholarships aside from DOH that offer the same? I am a graduating student with an honor in a state university here in Manila. I want to go to PLM or UP but since my parents are too old and those said schools are far from our house, it appears so impossible to me to pursue what I want yet neglect my parents. Hoping for your answers, doc 😉

    • kindly contact the DOH satelite offices near you so they can give you first hand information on your question. Goodluck.

    • i was a previous scholar of PLM. You can ask there. And try also the Doctor to the Barrios program scholarship.

  23. heisen

Good Days Doctor! When will be the scholarship of DOH start?

  24. Sid

Hello po doc, aill they cater all the expenses for tuition and other fees sa school, fully or just a specific amount thanks

  26. Sid

Doc can you expound po pano yung return of service. Thanks

  27. Mason

um excuse me sir ,mister !! i am a 3rd semester B.S Biology foreign student studying in The Philippines and expense are hardly meeting the ends so i just wanted to know if i can also apply this DOH Scholarship ? or is there any other scholarship that i can apply if so please kindly recommend . Thank you

  28. Drarg

Good day doc! Yung grants po na nasa question number 11, does it cover an entire year, or an entire semester?

Also, how about if the curriculum in med school involves only 3 years of studying and a year of clerkship, will DOH only sponsor the 3 years of studying?

    • Hi, better if you ask directly the DOH regional office where you are located to be sure. I don’t know if regulations have changed.

  29. Drarg

Another question, can we take up our residency while doing the return service?

  30. A, MD

    Hi Doc Pinky,

I’m planning to apply to the DTTB scholarship program. I’ve already been accepted into a DOH partner school and just waiting for the enrollment period. Regarding the return service, let’s say I’ve been accepted into the scholarship program (crossed fingers hehe), right after graduation and passing the licensure exam, are we obligated to render 3 years of service through the DTTB program? Or are we allowed to take a residency program before rendering our return service?

      • A, MD

What do you mean po by “no need”? So we’re allowed to take up a residency program before rendering our return service?

  31. shen

    Hi Dr Pinky,
Thanks for the gracious time in advising all queries. My daughter is intent to study med school, aside from Drs to the barrio DOH scholarship, do you know of any other government programs. We are from Bulacan, how can she qualify to apply at PLM reserve for Manila students only are there other considerations.

    Maraming salamat po!

    • I’m from PLM too, I live in Cavite. They admit even non-manila residents.

      • shen

Maraming salamat Doc Pinky, we will try to inquire sa process. All best po!

        Shen

  32. Sherila Pedres

Hi Dr. Pinky. RM na po ako since 2009 and incoming 4th year BS Midwifery student po ako this 2018-2019. Gusto ko po talagang mag medicine next next school year, due financial constraint po hindi biro ang mag aral ng ganitong kurso (Sana meron pang ganitong scholarship program next academic year) Ngayon pa lang po magreready na ako for NMAT. I need to pass NMAT first then procede to school that are accredited by scholarship of DOH. Tama po ba? Thanks po and God bless.

  33. Janile Ray

Good day Dr. Pinky , kapag po naaccept na po ako sa partner school and nakapag-pass na po ng laht ng requirements for the scholarship and theres no approval yet from the DOH na scholar na ako and mgsisimula na yung 1st sem , kasi po money matters po tlga ang problema sa case po ng pgkuha ng medicine course. Paano po yun ? So hindi po ako makakapg-start to take the med course po kapag gnun kasi tanggap na po tuition nalang babayaran para ma-admit as a student po.

    • Try to follow up DOH if you submitted your application na. Call them. I think they know naman na they need to decide before the start of the school year. Good luck.

  34. Jeff

Good morning/evening po Dr. Pinky, I was really enlightened after reading your article about the DOH scholarship. I am a freshmen nursing student right now but ultimately, I want to be a doctor. Makakatulong po talaga sakin yung program financially. Tanong ko lang po, in control kami for residency kung saan magiging resident at specialty or DOH ang pipili kung saan tulad ng sa DTTB? also are all DOH hospitals accredited by Philippine College of Surgeons? Thank you.

  35. nini

hello doc. doh scholarship lang po ang pinanghahawakan ko to finally study this year. tapos ang school na inapplyan ko is a private school (isa sa mga new partner schools na wala sa list above). i’m just afraid lang po doc na mahirap pag private school kasi kung magkaproblema babayaran mo lahat kahit may doh scholarship ka pa? or hindi rin? also doc, another problem of mine is medyo nahuli ako nakapasa sa doh in our region dahil may mga hinintay pa akong documents, sabi nila i have lesser priority na po. ganun po ba talaga, kasi po super early nila nagdeadline. unlike other universities. natatakot po ako na it will hurt my chances of getting the scholarship. paano po ba masabi na may chance ako matanggap ano po ba tinitingnan nila? malapit na po kasi enrolment tapos parang di pa sila nakakapili. and among let’s say 80 applicants tapos kaunti lang kukunin pa. saka po doc, kasali po ba ang clerkship sa scholarship? marami po bang expenses jan? sorry for the questions, doc. i hope i can hear from you soon. thank you.

    • nini

doc, please respond. i found out po na maliit chances ko sa doh scholarship which may mean na baka di talaga ako makapush through with med this time kasi doh pang talaga ang malaki ang coverage. ang ibang scholarship po ay tuition at books lang ang cover at walang living expenses which is difficult pa rin sa case ko na walang help from family at di makakasandal sa kanila. i feel heartbroken po doc. pero doc, ganito po pala kahirap makaavail ng doh scholarship??? it’s just that sobrang hirap po namin which is reflected naman sa itr at mataas naman grades ko at honors ko as reflected by my grades at awards. ano pa po bang gusto nila makita at gawin ko to see that i deserve it??? nakakalungkot that the government still can’t do so much for deserving people who just want to study, reach their dreams and serve. but doc, is there anything i can do to improve and get the scholarship?

  36. coni

Hi po, tanung ko lang po kung 5years ang na avail na scholarship so it means that the return service po ay 10 years, and nakalagay nga po dun the first three years is DTTB, tanung ko lang po kung paano po yung seven years na natitira, hawak pa rin po ba ng DOH kung san kami mag work or basta po around Philippines lang po. thank you po and Godbless po.

  37. Ral

Hi dra! Just want to personally ask you since you’re from PLM. What is the passing score for NMAT in PLM po? If ever nabago po ngayong year, how about noong time niyo po how high should be your score in NMAT to be accepted?

  38. Aki

Hello Dra. Pinky! Medyo may question lang po at gustong iclear po :))
Before I can apply to the said scholarship, I should be enrolled first on an accredited university right?
So I should pay the tuition fee on the said semester first. Once with proof of enrollment thats the only time I can apply to DOH scholarship. Tama po ba? salamat po!
and if ever po mam magapply gaano po katagal ang result if accepted on the said scholarship? Would it take long? thank you po and Godbless!

  39. Jornalyn Pinkihan

Hello Dra.. Have a nice day..
I am a RRT and aspiring also to become a doctor in my hometown.. We are poor and belong to the indegineous people in Ifugao so i am hoping to be qualified as a DTTB scholarship.. Thats my only hope actually to pursue my dream..but as of today I am working to help my siblings to their studies but hoping to enroll on 2019 or 2020 in any med school accredited for this scholarship..
I’m hoping that this scholarship will still be available by then.. Thank you for your story that inspires me more..

  40. Ral

Hi doctora! So RECAP tayo. First thing you need to do is to be accepted sa partner school, so that includes the panel interviews and taking MCAT. Can I apply na po ba for DOH Scholarship kahit hindi pa naglalabas ng results ang PLM if you are accepted or not? I’ve heard kasi na sobrang tagal daw po mag-release ng results ang PLM to know if you are accepted or not. And I’ve read here na maaga nagpapapasa ng requirements ang DOH, how will I handle that po Dra? Also, do I have to pay first the tuition for the 1st semester or covered na rin ng DOH iyon once you passed the scholarship?

  41. Jaxon

Hello po dra, I’m a NON-PREMED student and interested to study medicine. But my worries are the subjects na wala po sa aking premed, I’ve learned from others na pwede mong kunin ang subjects na ito by summer. Still covered pa rin ba ng DOH ang summer na required mong itake?

    • You need to take those before you can be accepted in medical school.

      • Jaxon

So it means po na hindi pa pwede mag-avail ng scholarship that time? Ako po ang accounted to pay for the tuition during that summer?

        • Jaxon

June pa rin po ba ang start ng school year sa PLM? And one more thing, possible po ba na isabay yung required units sa 1st semester if June ang start ng classes?

  42. Angel

Good day, Doctora Pinky! I want to be a medical oncologist, so after passing the board exam, I need to pursue 3 years of internal medicine and another 2-3 years for Medical Oncology fellowship training. Can I still continue my residency and fellowship training while rendering service as Doctor to the Barrio? 🙂 Thank you!

  43. Jhon renault rocios

Good day po. I just want to clear out about the return service in DOH scholarship program, which is 3 years as a DTTB and a 7 years remaining. Should i have to finish the 10 years of return service before applying the residency program?

    • You can apply residency in doh approved public hospitals as part of your pay back.

      • Jan

        Good day po, doc.
Curious thing lang po in line with this, will the salary during residency in a doh-accredited hospital be the same with that of DTTB’s rate? Thank you so much po doc.

  44. Jason tapales

Hi Doc! I’m on my 1st year premed year, can I still avail the DOH scholarship after Duterte’s term? Thank you and God bless!

    • That depends on the next president if he will support the project. The med scholarship was started by GMA, stopped in Aquino time, the re started again by Duterte. Let’s hope and pray that they will.

Hello, Doc! Is there any way one can specialize a medical field during the return service?
