How to Become Patriotic in the Philippines by Becoming Rich

Philippines, our beloved country, is now under a very stressful situation.  War on Drugs, Senate and House hearings and even colorful headlines of both local and international media.

To all ordinary people like me who just watch and wait for something to happen, we wonder what can we do to help?  How can we all contribute to our country without jumping into politics?

Then I remember my mentors in my CWP class.  It’s a class that makes us Certified Wealth Planners in the country.  A professor ask us a  question.

The question was:

In other first world countries that you have been to, why do you think their country are RICH in the first place?

As I think of my answer and remember my travels.  Well, I have been in few rich countries, and as I observe how they go about their daily lives, and I have notice one thing.

All of the citizens have work, in fact, that’s the only thing they do, work.  They are so busy working.  And the fruits of their labor are: food in the table, car, house, and money for other things.

Technically, the people there are earning, they are rich and they are self-reliant.

In the book, “Dare to Journey: The Path to Meaningful Wealth,” the authors said,

“Economist often view the development prospect of a nation from the country’s average per capita income, or the average income a family earns annually.  The income represents, the family’s unit purchasing power and demand for economic activity such income may generate from the economy.  And we all know what comes next.

With more employed citizens, the demand for goods and services continues to grow and more opportunities are afforded even to those marginalized through what is called the trickle effect.

When people in the country experience growth in their income, country’s total economic activity as expressed by Gross Domestic Product or GDP grows as well.  As the country grows and progresses, its ability to provide opportunities for business and employment, pay its debts, and attract investors will continue that story of success, further sustaining its development.

….the engine of a nations progress thus rest squarely on citizens who decide and act to pursuing wealth.

pursing wealth is a PATRIOTIC ACT that has to be encouraged, propagated and sustained.

The authors of the book are also our mentors in the said class, said that, to make it more simple.  GDP and GNP of one country are just defining how rich their people are.

Not the other way around.

Just like in the rich countries.

Knowing all these, how do we make ourselves more productive, and contributors of the society?

1. First, be financially literate and then, pursue wealth. Become a rich person.

First and foremost, the reason is for yourself and your family, eventually, while pursuing wealth it will also help our economy and our country.

2. Invest in the stock market. In the latest survey, there are still less than 1M Filipinos investing in the stock market.  Representing less 1% of the population.

The figures are in obvious contrast with that of other Southeast Asian nations’ stock market. The number of investors in Singapore has the highest proportion of its population — around 33% — with investments in the stock market.  Australia and Japan both have roughly 25% each; while Malaysia has 18%; Hong Kong, 17%; and Korea, 10% of their citizens invest in the stock market.

“Tulong-tulong lahat.  Yung mga walang business, mag-invest sa business ng iba.”

3. As much as possible be self-reliant against personal emergencies and catastrophes.

Get Life insurance in case of death.  So that your dependents won’t ask the government to be fed in case you gone early.

Get Health Insurances in cases of health emergencies, critical disease and disability.

Although the government may provide for these, it is often not enough.  Have the initiative to provide those emergency measures for your family especially if you can.

Not all of us can do something in the political era of this country.

Not all of us can be a police or government official that can directly help our fellow countrymen.

“But all us, if we strive to pursue wealth and be rich even for ourselves and our own family, we can contribute to our beloved Philippines.”

Let’s do this.  Let us all become wealthy, literally.
