Breastfeeding is Love

momandtatibfTo tell a little about myself, I am a breastfeeding mom for almost a year now.  Not only that, I am also pro-natural parenting, which includes cloth diapering, baby sign language, baby led weaning and baby wearing.

My breastfeeding experience is one of the most difficult but very rewarding stages of my motherhood.  Being a working mom made it even more challenging which majorly due to carrying a lot of stuff adding to the already heavy stuff is the breastfeeding bag.  Another problem I encountered was finding a discreet breastfeeding room where I can pump.  There was even a time where I cannot find a place to pump and I have to pump in numerous places you can never imagine.  Such places are (dimly lit movie theater while watching IMAX, Starbucks table while waiting for a client, while in a conference amidst all the people there), I even considered pumping while in a public transport vehicle (although did not happen, ‘muntik na’).  Those are just some of the difficulties I have encountered in breastfeeding.

If there are difficulties, I believe there are much more numerous things I love about breastfeeding, which includes: I love the closeness I have with my  baby, and I know that my baby knows, this is one thing, I am the only one that can provide.  I fall asleep, snuggled beside her while nursing.  Which makes it easy for me  to cuddle her and stroke her hair, smell her scent and just being there is worth it.  I can feel that breastfeeding is one of those things that provide me plenty of that “feel-good-hormone” so called the ENDORPHINS.  I am just happy whenever she demands to be fed.  And maybe I also feel good because I know I am providing the best food for my baby and the best defense she needs. And of course the savings that go with it.

I have recently come across discussions of moms who formula-fed their babies and how much they are spending on formula milk.  On the average, they are spending 1,500 pesos per week for the powdered milk+ water and accessories for bottle feeding.  As a financial consultant, I drew a rough estimate of expenses you are saving yourself for being a breastfeeding mom.

The table above speaks for itself.  It only means one thing you can save more or less 78,000 pesos a year.  And this much saving can be put in a better investment, like saving for your child’s education for the future.

Indeed breastfeeding is love.  It is not only giving your milk, it is giving your time (since you cannot be part from your baby for a long time), it means giving up your wardrobe (since you need to settle to limited nursing dresses), and it is being selfless since you are giving up your  whole person.  But I tell you, it is all worth it, and I can say I will do it all over again if I have to.  It is one of the best moments of my life.

  1. I also exclusively breastfed and did cloth diapering. It was tough at times, tiring, sometimes overwhelming but definitely worth it. My 2 children are in their teens now and are very healthy, thankfully they hardly get sick. My three year old is active and healthy. Proud to be a breastfeeding mom!

  2. Thanks for sharing the savings we get from breastfeeding! I shared it with my husband. Sabi ko dapat pala itreat niya ako shopping once in a while! Haha!

I love this because I feel it too:
“I love the closeness I have with my baby, and I know that my baby knows, this is one thing, I am the only one that can provide.”

    Breastfeeding is indeed love!

Hi mitz, yes, tell your hubby 78K worth of shopping galore. haha. 🙂 or savings could be saved na rin for baby’s future educational plan. 🙂

  4. Hi Doc Pinky,
Wow it’s my first time to drop by your blog and I love how you religiously make a computation or table showing the figures for easy understanding. I also practice pro-natural parenting where I cloth diaper my baby, teach baby sign language, practice baby led weaning and wear my baby sometimes, on top of exclusively breastfeeding my 14-month old toddler. If there’s one thing that I’m proud of as a mom, it is to breastfeed my child all the way. 🙂

    • Thanks Sally! I hope you will learn a lot also. I so love pro-natural parenting. You can see the difference with your child. they are less fussy since they are more confident, because they know you are always there for them. am i right?
