The Exciting Effect of Extended Maternity Leave to SSS Maternity Benefits

Previously, I was able to get the maximum benefit of P41,600 from childbirth for my 2nd child last 2017.  But because of the Expanded Maternity Leave Law that was signed this 2019…

What will be the effect of this to the SSS Maternity Benefit claim?

Before I share with you the news let me brief you the 2 facts that happened that contributed to the change:

  1. Last April 2019, SSS also increased the contribution from 11% to 12% of the Monthly Salary Credit. Because of that increase the computation for getting the maternity benefit claim increased too. (RA 11199, or the Social Security Act of 2018.)
  2. The signing and implementation of the Expanded Maternity Leave. (Republic Act 11210, or the Expanded Maternity Leave Law (EMLL)

If we are going to compute the maximum maternity claim in the future, as long as the number of contributions are satisfied.

Instead of getting up to P41,600 maximum benefit, the new maximum benefit of maternity claim can be as much as P70,000 or P80,000 for a Solo Parent.

Wow, that’s good news for all the parents out there, most especially the mothers. But, for SSS, will this be a good news?

According to an actuarial study of the SSS, if the additional cost of P7.5 billion is added to the current maternity benefit cost of around P6 billion, this would mean a total benefit cost amounting to P13.5 billion. (Business Mirror)

The Expanded Maternity Leave law is estimated to shorten the Social Security System’s (SSS) fund life by one year if a contribution hike is not imposed to correct this situation. (pna.gov)

The SSS is expected to source fund from other sources within the Social Security fund.

Under Republic Act (RA) 11199, otherwise known as the Social Security Act of 2018, the state-pension fund for workers in the private sector may increase contributions by one percentage point every other year from the current 11 percent to 15 percent by 2025 without the approval of the President.

Let’s do hope this will further support the growing claims in our Social Security System.  For now, let’s be grateful for this, pay our dues and contribute to a better country.

Hi doc Pinky, does the minimum or maximum benefit term still apply?

“3 out of 6 contributions will entitle you to minimum benefits.
6 out of 6 contributions will entitle you to maximum benefits.”

    • Start na, but the law was just enacted and benefits depends on contribution. So, baka next year ang full effect of that.
